UT-Heart, a multi-scale, multi-physics heart simulator and its clinical applications

UT-heart is a finite element method based in silico heart, in which electrophysiology, contraction & relaxation, blood flow of the heart (multi-physics phenomena) are reproduced based on the molecular mechanisms of cardiac excitation contraction coupling processes implemented in myocyte models (multi-scale). In this presentation, among the various fields of applications, I will focus on the clinical application through the construction of patient-specific models.

From Biomedical Imaging and Modeling to Visualization Environments for Image Guidance of Minimally Invasive Cardiac Interventions

Over the past decades, the advances in medical devices have enabled access to the internal organs through small, less invasive entry routes inside the body. However, real-time visualization is critical for guidance in absence of direct vision; the paramount reason cardiac interventions have been among the last disciplines to adopt the minimally invasive therapy approaches , given the challenges associated with real-time guidance inside the beating heart. Recent technology developments in medical image acquisition, visualization and display, surgical tacking, and image computing infrastructure have facilitated diagnosis, procedure planning, intra-operative guidance and treatment monitoring, while providing safer and less invasive approaches for therapy delivery. This lecture will highlight on several technologies and techniques on the forefront of image-guided cardiac interventions – direct access mitral valve repair and replacement, enhanced planning of robot-assisted coronary bypass interventions, and online lesion modeling and visualization for monitoring of cardiac ablation therapy - along with their engineering limitations and challenges in translation from bench to bedside. Potential avenues on how to leverage the available infrastructure and expertise in the community, together with the clinical support and collaborations will be highlighted, to further promote and overcome the slow progress in the clinical translation of image-guided cardiac interventions.
